Breton Visit - 30th April [Summer Term] [top]

Coláiste Ghobnatan welcomed a group of seventy students and a teacher from Brittany, who came to the area to experience our culture. They were on a school trip and we arranged in advance through the Internet to have a ‘céilí’ and a ‘fest noz’ (their traditional dance) together. Irish music and Briton music was played and everybody present learned six dances from both countries. Students and teachers from both schools enjoyed it very much.

Graduation Night [Summer Term][top]

A Graduation Night for Leaving Cert students was held in the College on Thursday 24th May 2001. Leaving Cert students, their parents and teachers attended. Firstly the school chaplain, Fr. Buckley celebrated Mass and then the students were presented with certificates and a small token from the College. An enjoyable night was had by all.

Sailing [Summer Term] [top]

A few weeks ago nine students from my class and I went on a sailing trip to Schull, Co. Cork. We thoroughly enjoyed it. We had three instructors, they were very good and gave us a lot of help. We didn’t have much time to learn sailing but it was easier than we expected to learn.

The first day we learned how to rig up the boat and how to steer it. Then we went out sailing for a short while. They didn’t have to explain anything to us the second day so we were able to spend the whole day sailing. We also played games like soccer in the boats. We were returning home the next day so we spent the time we had sailing. The place was lovely and the people were very friendly. We would all like to go back there again!

First year and second year students showed just how romantic they can be in their writing in this competition. There was a very high standard of entry and it was difficult ot chose winners. However, the judges came to a decision in the end and these were the winners:

            First Year                                     Second Year

1a: Mairéad Ní Chéilleachair                 2a: Sharon Ni Chroinín

Ceappa na Laoi 2001: [Easter Term] [top]

A group of students from fifth year went on a week-end trip to Ceappa na Laoi on Friday 23rd February. Twenty seven students in all went accompanied by a teacher from the College, Mr Clifford. When we reached the place we were divided into two groups for activities and four groups for cleaning up. We had to stay in these groups for the full week-end.

We went on a five mile walk on Friday night and we had great ‘craic’. On Saturday the two groups were involved in different activities. One group went mountain climbing and canoeing. The other group went orienteering and mountain climbing. The College Chaplain, Fr. Buckley, came to Ceappa na Laoi on Saturday to celebrate Mass. A variety of games was arranged later on in the night and we had a lot of fun late into the night
.

On Sunday both groups went orienteering and abseiling. We left Ceappa na Laoi at 4:30pm. Everybody enjoyed the week-end and I think will remember it for a long time.

We would like to thank Mr Clifford, who organized the trip and Fr Buckley who came to celebrate Mass.

Open Night [Easter Term] [top]

An Open Night/Registration Night was held in the College on Friday 2nd March. Sixth class pupils from the local National Schools came to the College with their parents. Official registration for the next school year took place. Pupils and parents were also able to view the College and discuss equipment and facilities with staff. The Principal addressed the parents and they had an opportunity to ask questions.

Risteard plays with Cork Colleges  [Easter Term] [top]

Risteard Ó hUidhir was chosen to play with Cork Colleges in 2001. They lost the Munster Final against Kerry. It was a very sporting game. We are all very proud of Risteard, he played very well, but the team just didn’t have the luck on the day.

Girls Basketball - Under 18 [Easter Term] [top]

A basketball blitz for Girls Under 18 was held in the Sports Hall in Macroom on Wednesday, 21st February. There were two teams from Baile Mhuirne – The Green Team and the Red Team.

Four teams took part in the competition –Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh, Maigh Chromtha, Baile Mhuirne Green and Baile Mhuirne Red.

The games were played in the following order:

1.     12.00 pm – Beal Atha’n Ghaorthaidh v Baile Mhúirne Glas.

2.     12.30 pm – Maigh Chromtha v Baile Mhúirne Dearg.

3.     01.00 pm – Beal Atha’n Ghaorthaidh v Maigh Chromtha.

4.     01.30 pm – Baile Mhúirne Dearg v Baile Mhúirne Glas.

5.     02.00 pm – Maigh Chromtha v Baile Mhúirne Glas.

6.     02.30 pm – Beal Atha’n Ghaorthaidh v Baile Mhúirne Dearg.

Both teams from Baile Mhuirne played very well. I think that the game between Beál Átha’n Ghaorthaidh and Baile Mhuirne Dearg was the best. Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh won in the end but we were very proud of the teams from our school.

Sixth Class Visit the College [Easter Term] [top]

On February 28th last, the sixth class pupils from the local National Schools visited our College. They got an opportunity to tour the College during the working school day. A timetable incorporating a variety of rooms/subjects and teachers gave a ‘taste’ of the wide range of subjects available. Pupils were able to use the equipment in specialist rooms such as the Computer Room, Science Room, Woodwork Room and Metalwork Room. The pupils enjoyed their day and were very satisfied going home.

Play Review [Christmas Term] [top]

The school visited Siamsa Tíre in Tralee on Tuesday last 7th November to see a production by Barnstorm theatre Company entitled “Earwigs”.  Here are the reactions of two of the students, Cáit Ní Mhurchú and Laura Ní Cheallacháín, as described by Cáit…

Initially, I thought that it was going to be a terrific play.  Laura had a different view because the setting and atmosphere were not to her satisfaction.  She felt that there was a lack of props and was dissatisfied with the effort put into stage design.  I agree with her on this because I felt that there could have been more imagination put into the kitchen and neighbourhood.

Most of the play is set in the Byrne family’s kitchen.  The main character, Eddie, is a wacky eleven year old who is forced to keep (what he thinks) is a terrible secret from his parents.  He manages to do this for some time but the whole thing soon gets completely out of control.  Eddie’s parents, Joe and Bernie, are highly suspicious of Tony (Eddie’s older brother).  They think he is on drugs because the Mrs Bucket type neighbour has convinced Bernie that Tony is showing all the telltale signs.  The play continues from there and the truth comes out in the end.

I wasn’t impressed with the play because I felt that the contrast between having an angry father to having an understanding priest, using the same actor was imappropriate.  I think that Laura felt the same way about this aspect of the play.

As for a recommendation, this is what Laura had to say about her overall view of the play:  “Overall, I thought this story was realistic.  It could easily happen in reality!  It was interesting, funny and realistic .. I, myself, felt the actors were very impressive.  On the other hand, however, I didn’t really enjoy the play as much as I had hoped.”

Christmas Concert [Christmas Term] [top]

A Christmas Concert was held in the ‘Ionad Cultúrtha’ on Friday 15th December. It was organized by three teachers – Tara Ní Raifeartaigh, Toirdealbhach Ó Lionáird and Fr Buckley.

It started with three first year pupils playing musical instruments – Méadhbh Ní Cheallaigh, Eibhlín Nic Cárthaigh and Ellma Ní Dhuinnín. Caitríona Ní Scanaill sang ‘Mo Ghile Mear’ also. In between the tunes Lalise Ní Chárthaigh, Julie Ni Chríodáin, Deirdre Ní Iarlaithe, Caitríona Ní Chuill and Eibhlín Ní Chlúmháin read some readings from ‘Scéal na Nollag’.

Cáit Ní Chonchúir welcomed everyone on stage. Deirdre Ní Chéilleachair and Nicola Ní Chriodáin played the fiddle. Katie Ní Mhurchú played the fiddle accompanied by Ellma Ni Dhuinnín on the concertina.

Caitríona Ní Chuill and Sarah May Hamilton sang a ‘sean-nós’ song. They have very good voices! Siobhán Ní Mhurchú and Laoise Ni Chárthaigh performed a dialogue. It was about two girls w
ho were fighting with each other, but at the end they became friends again.

Then, a group danced ‘Ríl Baile Mhuirne’ – Danielle Ní hUidhir, Gráinne Ní Luasa, Eibhlín Ní Chlúmháin, Mairéad Ní Cheallaigh, Muireann Ní Cheallaigh, Caitríona Ní Chuill, Laoise Nic Cárthaigh and Siobhán Ni Mhurchú. Damian Ó Loinsigh played the accordion. They were all excellent!

A mixed choir, put together by the two French teachers, finished off the day. They sang four Christmas songs in French: ‘Joyeux Noel’, ‘Les anges de nos campagnes’, ‘Vive Le Vent’ and ‘Dou
ce Nuit, Sainte Nuit’.

I thought the Concert was excellent. The two French teachers and the priest spent a lot of time organizing it; they did a fantastic job. Everybody enjoyed the concert. Now, we are all looking forward to the next concert next year please God.

New Computer Room [Christmas Term] [top]

The official opening of the new computer room took place in the College on 19th October last. Mr Barry O’Brien, Chief Executive Officer of Co Cork VEC was present along with other VEC members. The total cost of the room was £70,000, jointly funded by Co Cork VEC and by the generous sponsorship of local business. The College is very grateful to local business for their sponsorship, without which this venture would not have been possible. The room is equipped with the latest up to date technology. There are thirty Pentium III computers all networked. Connection to the Internet is by way of an ISDN line, which enables all thirty computers to be on line simultaneously. Every pupil has his/her own email address. There is also a projector in the room, which is an excellent teaching aid.

Many people from the local area attend computer night classes. The facilities in the room are in use not only during the day but also every night of the working week – such is the demand for computer tuition. The facilities available in the Computer Room enable students to experience modern technology at it’s best. Each student is assigned his/her own computer, which is a big advantage as it enables maximum ‘hands-on’ experience.

Fashion Show [Christmas Term] [top]

A fashion show was held in the Abbey Hotel on 23rd October and a great night was had by all. There were seven professional models present and a few other models who were even better! They modeled clothes from ‘Chic’, ‘Eyecatcher’, ‘Linehans’, ‘Athea Designs’ and ‘Noreens Fashions’.

The ‘Aran Man’, Colmán Ó Tuama, modeled a jumper from ‘Athea Designs’. Then, the football star Micheál Ó Suilleabháin came on the catwalk and the question was – would Jason MacCárthaigh be following in his footsteps? - well down the catwalk anyway. Toirdealbhach walked down the catwalk in true French style. Eimear and Evelyn modeled beautiful dresses and Pádraig looked very professional!

The night was organised by the Parents Committee in aid of a new school bus. The admittance fee was £5 for adults and £3 for students and there was cheese and wine reception.

The night was a great success and the College raised between £1,500 and £1,800. We would like to thank everyone who helped organise the night.

Musicians [Christmas Term] [top]

A group of traditional musicians visited the College on 1st December. Cran was the name of the group. They played for the staff and students. They played various musical instruments for example the uilinn pipes and the flute. Máire Ní Chéilleachair also sang a few songs. Máire teaches singing here in the College. Everybody enjoyed their visit.

Here is some information about the members of the Group:

Ronan Browne: He plays the uilinn pipes and he is from Dublin. He was a great friend of Séamus Ennis and he met Willie Clancy, the famous piper from Co. Clare.

Seán Corcoran: Seán is the singer in the group. He is ver
y interested in the Scottish songs. He knew Diarmuid Ó Suilleabháin. He also plays the bouzouki.

Desi Wilkinson: He plays the flute and he has a knowledge of flutes from all parts of the world. He brought a few samples of pipes from different countries and he played some of them in Coláiste Ghobnatan. He is from Belfast.

Scór  Na  N-Óg [Christmas Term][top]

Scór na nÓg was held on Saturday 26th November in the Éire Óg Sports Hall. Many students from Coláiste Ghobnatan participated in the competition. Naomh Ábán Football Club ented a team in the Quiz, the team members were: Eibhlín Ní Chlúmháin, Pól Ó Ceocháin, Micheál Ó Riordáin, Sinéad Ní Shuilleabháin, Seán Ó Murchú agus Gráinne Ní Luasa. Breandán Ó Cuana, Pádraig Ó Conchúir and Eoin de hÍde represented the Cill na Martra team.

There was a lot of friendly rivalry between Baile Mhuirne and Cill na Martra. Baile Mhuirne were winning the argument at the beginning, but they were to be surprised when the two teams from Cill na Martra won out in the end.

Coláiste Ghobnatan students also entered the dance competition – Caitríona Ní Chuill, Muireann Ní Cheallaigh, Mairead Ní Cheallaigh, Danielle Ní hUidhir, Gráinne Ní Luasa, Eibhlín Ní Chlúmháin, Laoise Nic Cárthaigh agus Siobhán Ní Mhurchú. They took second place which was very good, considering that they had been practicing for just two weeks. However, there was one ‘catch’ – there were only two groups in the dance competition!

A group of musicians from first year also participated – Ellma Ní Dhuinnín, Meadhbh Ní Cheallaigh, Caitríona Ní Scanaill, Ruth Ní Liathain and Eibhlín Ní Laoire. They were excellent and I heard that they got a place in Riverdance! (disappointment for the dance group but they made too many mistakes to appear on television!)

Stude
nts also participated in other competitions including singing. Many teams from Cill na Martra went ahead to the next round of the competition - congratulations to them all! The Cill na Martra Quiz Team reached the County Final which took place in Millstreet and they took second place – an excellent result.
