Aims & Objectives [top]

  • To form young adults who will be capable of living in and contributing to the community to which they belong.

  • To encourage students to have ideals of excellence in all aspects of their lives – spiritual, moral and intellectual.

  • To provide an environment where each student is cherished equally and is nurtured to a personal, intellectual and moral maturity.

  • To create an atmosphere of excellence in learning, challenging the pupils to reach their full potential.

  • To place emphasis on equality of opportunity and offer flexibility in response to an ever changing society.

  • To encourage a mutual respect for one another where the joy of learning becomes a reciprocal experience.

Brief History of the School  [top]

Gairmscoil Ghobnatan, as it was then known, was opened in 1950. Initially, it was a one-roomed building employing one wholetime teacher. Over the years it has evolved through building, refurbishment and the provision of the most up-to-date facilities into today’s fully equipped modern college. In 1989 Scoil Ghobnatan amalgamated with Coláiste Iosagáin to form Coláiste Ghobnatan. At that time a sizeable extension was added to the College. In 1996 two extra rooms were built – a Language room and a Technical Drawing room.

Parents Council  [top]

The current Parents Council was established in the 1999-2000 school year. It comprises of twelve members and Mr Breandán Ó Lionáird also attends meetings. A lot of effort has been put into fundraising for a school bus, which is currently being purchased.

Many local businesses were very generous in their contributions to the school bus fund, which currently stands at £10,000 approximately. The Parents Council was also delighted with the support of both pupils, parents and teachers in reaching this figure. Fund raising events included card drives, a quiz, a raffle, a bazaar, a cake sale, a gardening night and bag packing in Dunnes Stores in Killarney.

We will, of course, be continuing in our efforts to fund raise for the benefit of the pupils in the future.

Cultural Centre [top]

Muscraí and Baile Mhuirne/Cúil Aodha in particular, has earned a reputation for it’s wealth of culture. A Cultural Centre was built beside the College in 1980 to support and enhance this rich heritage. Various performances take place in the Centre, which give an opportunity to the public to experience the world of the Arts, both new and old, and by attending classes our students have an opportunity to be involved in the development of our cultural for the future.

The Library [top]

We are particularly lucky to have a public library situated in the College. The library services the pupils as well as the local people. There is a wide variety of books available in the College library.

This gives students and teachers the opportunity of locating books, that otherwise would not be easily available. The writers and poets of the area are known far and wide and it is most appropriate that they now have a place in their own local library.
